Android users still mostly on out-of-date versions

Google is prepared the next iteration of their popular Android smartphone operating system, Android 5.0 Key Lime, but most users are not even up to date with the latest 4.2 Jelly Bean updated.

Stats from the Android Developers website show that finally Android 4.2 Jelly Bean has overtaken Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, with each now respectively holding 28.4% and 27.5% of the platforms usage share. But this sadly simply puts 4.2 Jelly Bean into second place. The top platform isn’t from the 4.0 range at all, or even the from Android 3. It’s still Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which holds a whopping 38.5% share of the Android usage, was initially released all the way back in December 2010. Despite it now being close to two and a half years after its launch this out of date software is holding market share in a way that only old versions of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer can match!

Unless Android 4.2 Jelly Bean makes big jumps in market share from new phone sales and users updating it’s likely that when Google is predicted to unveil Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie later this month at Google I/O that Android 2.3 will still be the most popular version.

Google’s I/O conference is shaping up to be an interesting event if all the rumours that are surfacing turn out to be correct. The conference is rumoured to not only be the launch pad for the next version of Android, but also be the place that Google launches it’s Babble messaging service. Babble is rumoured to be a service that unified Google T alk, Voice, Messenger, Hangouts and other communication platforms together, similar to how Blackberry Messenger of Apple’s iMessage services work.

Google is also likely to unveil Nexus tablets and smartphones including the Nexus 7.7 tablet, the Nexus 5 smartphone, and possibly an upgraded Nexus 4 smartphone. It’s possible that the long awaited Motorola X Phone will also be released at the event, with new photos of the device leaked today (more about these later in the article).

Late yesterday evening a leak appeared of what is rumoured to be the next Motorola smartphone. The leaks come from the evleaks source which has frequently proved itself to be reliable. This time though they are being cautious in whether of not it is the X Phone. If they are, these will be the first leaked photos of the long awaited unreleased phone from Motorola.

The photos show the smartphone encased in a black plastic box that are obviously there to keep the design of the device hidden from public view. The screen looks fantastic, but we don’t really get much else from the photos to help up piece together what the new phone will be like. The model number is simply XFON ATT which is why the X Phone suggestion is being touted as what the leaked photos my be.

If Google is going to release the X Phone at this years I/O isn’t yet clear, but all will be revealed when their three hour long keynote starts which will be at 2PM UK time on the 15th May. Needless to say we’ll be covering the event at the time.
